family

This is what family does

October 16, 2014 by MsCheevious

Last month I flew home for three days to help my family do a spruce up of our childhood home. I come from a family of 11 – yes ELEVEN – kids from the same set of biological parents. We were raised Catholic. I have my own set of excuses I like to give for how 11 kids came about… “My mom was Catholic and my dad was easy…”, “My dad was in the navy, so my mom got pregnant every time he came home”… “I was adopted.” You get the idea.

Our family home is on the market, but was in dire need of serious attention, so, off I went.

When I say that my family and I did this, I’m exaggerating. Sure, twelve people were present and accounted for:

Me and my three sisters (Pah-tay, Ice-tay and Smart-tay – all of the “tays” were in my Capers of the Sherwood Kind video);

Our lovely former sis-in-law Hot-Tay and her beau;

Two of Smart-tay’s lovely daughters (our nieces), a grand-niece and one of Bliss-Niece’s good friends (all came from out of town to help);

One of our brothers (when he wasn’t working – about a half a day – throughout the weekend);

A girl I went to school with in third grade who was crazy (I mean lovely) enough to respond to my begging and pleading on Facebook;

When I say that we spruced up the home, I mean we prepped a seven bedroom home, the doors, light fixtures, fireplace, trim etc. We painted four of the bedrooms, most of the main rooms (kitchen, living room, den, bathroom), and we did things like repair lights that were falling out of the ceiling, linoleum that was peeling up and so on. We also strategically placed throw rugs to cover flooring that would be replaced when the house sells. IN TWO DAYS.

WE ROCKED THAT THING.

On Saturday night our youngest brother invited us (his sisters) to come out to hear his band perform at a bar in town. Smar-Tay and Ice-Tay, the two oldest, declined. They don’t “do” clubs anymore. That left me, Pah-tay and Hot-tay to represent for our brother. We were exhausted and covered in paint, but something about live music at a club (and copious amounts of cocktails) holds a certain appeal and makes a girl want to make an effort. Plus, we felt it was a great opportunity to show our brother that we support him and our family, regardless of circumstances.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Our little rock-n-roll brother did not grace our family’s home once during the weekend, even on his day off. Two other of our brothers didn’t make it for various other reasons. (Okay, one of them cut the tip of his finger off, and the other was in rehab… EXCUSES, EXCUSES).

But THIS? This begs the question, “Why show up in support of little rocker brother, when he didn’t support you?” which demands the answer: BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT FAMILY DOES. We (my sisters and I) are not barbarians, for goddsakes.

Here is what our family’s home looked like on Monday morning, as we laid down the last of the throw rugs, and Pah-tay and I drove to the airport to fly home:

Family Spruce Up

By the way – if you’re an actor, producer, director, or just someone who loves the Southwest, and you’re looking for an affordable place to shack up in Albuquerque, maybe so you can ride the New Mexico Entertainment Industry Gravy Train… Have I got a property for you! And it’s SUPER AFFORDABLE, with a swimming pool, on corner lot, with TONS OF SPACE, and two blocks from the Catholic church. Need I say more?

I’d buy it if I could, because dangit – it’s a great house. SNIFF SNIFF.

#MomFactor: Teach your sons to be chivalrous, valiant, and to protect, love and support their sisters.

SHOW BLOGGING

#Reviews

One of the things I’ve always thought would be fun about living in New York City (if that should ever come to pass), would be the immediate and easy access to Broadway shows or theatre in general. That and the subway, but have you heard? Los Angeles has a real-life subway and it’s spreading across town! Squeee!

I actually love all art forms and seeing great plays, comedy shows, interesting films, fine art exhibits and musical performances (or bands and “artists” for you rock stars) takes me to my happy place.

I apparently love to be entertained!

And as long as it takes any form other than me dancing around my living room with a loaf of bread, I’m good.

But because I live three blocks from the sand in the city of Los Angeles (where the subway has not yet reached), I don’t often get out to see shows unless they happen to be within walking distance (which, in our neighborhood could be street performers singing along to a transistor radio). I just don’t get out as much as I’d like. It is Los Angeles, for goddsakes. Have you heard of the traffic here?

This week was different.

When Monica Davis, a talented actress, comedienne and UC Berkeley graduate (in political science, no less) invited me to review her one-woman show The Monica Davis Show, I have to admit you guys, I was a little excited. Like, get dressed up for “The THEATRE” (insert old British guy’s voice), excited.

I thought it was probably going to be a comedy (I’d seen clips posted by Monica on Facebook that cracked me up) and that it was staged in a small theatre in LA’s theatre row on Santa Monica Boulevard (some of these theaters are so far off-Broadway, they’re smaller than my walk-in closet), but I was excited anyway.

All I knew in advance about the show was the title, and that it was done in a talk show format. It was promoted as Monica’s way to finally “be just like Oprah” — something she dreamed of as a child. I thought the show was truly inventive and fun.  It was produced with a combination of video clips and live performance. “Host” Monica, conducted the interview via big flat screen TV, and “live,” in-person Monica answered interview questions as various incarnations of herself (the Thief, the Hooker, and some other fun and sorted characters).

Going in, I half expected an uproarious comedy, based on what I know of Monica, and hey, it certainly served up some good laughs!  But it was also a sweet, touching, coming of age in Los Angeles piece that tells the familiar tale of single life, family drama and finding the strength to be empowered despite the jerks and the pitfalls. We’ve all been there right?

If you live in or near Los Angeles, and are looking for something fun, unique and cultural to do – I recommend you see The Monica Davis Show.

It runs every Saturday evening through March, 2014 at Studio C Artists – 6448 Santa Monica Boulevard, just west of Cahuenga in Hollywood.

Besides – you could probably do with a little culture, right?

And my rating?

This show gets 7 out of 10 Chocolates, because — I just gotta have the FUNNY in my life. Especially now. (Long Story). It was a really great show and well-worth the time, the drive etc… I just decided that chocolates equate non-stop-laughs FUNNY for some reason. LOL! (You’d think vodka would equate funny, because everything’s funnier with more vodka, but no). Don’t get me wrong! This show was incredibly funny! It just had some tears and other emotions too. It was a great all around experience!

Chocolate Rating

BUT – – It gets 10 outta 10 vodkas because,

DAMN GIRL, you are one tough bitch. When I grow up, I think I want to be you.

This could work in your favor

This could work in your favor

I’m jet-lagged, wine sopped, bread clogged and totally time-zone screwy. I returned from Houston late last night, but am still recovering. I need some help. Even though I indulged in whatever was put in front of me in Houston, I’m eating all carbs all the time just to be able to stay awake! If I’m not careful, before the day is done, I’ll be one big giant JABBA-JIGGLE. This could get ugly. To top it off, I received a box looking just like this filled with decadent, delicious chocolates today.

Sucre_Chocolate

Here’s how this could work for you, though. BEFORE I received this box of yumminess, the great folks at SUCRE CHOCOLATES reached out asking if they could send chocolates to one of YOU, my lovely readers.

My immediate response was, “Shhh-NO! Don’t you people know that my life’s mantra is anything is better with a little chocolate, or vodka, or both?” I let them know I would have to “sample” these supposedly great chocolates, before imposing them on one of you.

So to hell with my jabba-worries. It’s time to JABBA-INDULGE people.

Soon, I’ll offer one of you gorgeous “commenting” readers a chance to win a box all to yourself! It won’t be long… I’ll be over here in my corner conducting my chocolate experiment and JIGGLING up. I’ll let you know how Sucre fares. Then watch for the little contest of YUMMINESS.

They were never supposed to seem so cool

September 22, 2013 by MsCheevious

Last Wednesday night I took the red-eye to Houston for a long weekend with the Texas Contingent.  That’s the name for my family in Texas because after four days of big food, big wine and little sleep, it’s as ingenious as I can be. But let me clarify: My family is not from Texas. Some of them transplanted there and their families proceeded to grow. Kinda like a weed.

I hadn’t been out there for about fourteen or so years, when my youngest, Graden was about four — or so (funny how I am now sounding just like all of the other adults I knew growing up, who when asked to name a year for a specific event,  favorite song on the radio, or otherwise would ponder it and reply noncommittally with something like  “Oh… I don’t know. Maybe 30 years ago, or so.”). The reason for the trip was to PAR-TAY at PAH-TAY‘s house (look that one up – you’ll be glad you did). One of Pah-tay’s daughter’s (my niece) was turning forty (it’s a freak of nature thing… she’s actually OLDER.THAN.ME.SWEAR.TO.GOD.), and Pah-tay was throwing a party for her. She was also throwing a big baby shower for her youngest daughter (my niece) who was having her first baby. Big party in Big Texas.

And you guys, this is SEPTEMBER!

As many of you know, September is a big month for me already because it’s Ovarian Cancer month, and I do what I can to honor and pay homage to my beloved sister Maven (this year I am selling my cute little charm bracelets and have made them super affordable so everyone can wear one and show their support for the cause.)

Add to that the fact my sister Maven’s daughter would be there with gorgeous grandson #1 whom Maven met just days before passing, as well as grandson #2, whom my sissy never got to meet… it meant I was GOING.

If AT ALL POSSIBLE, I WAS GOING.

Maven had so looked forward to being a Nonna (grandmother in Italian), and it was only to be for a few days, so since her death, I’ve tried my best to be a surrogate Nonna to these boys (#2 even I hadn’t met)… I fail miserably most of the time, because I’m just not with them, nor have I been with any of Maven’s family for most of their lives. But hell. I can try.

So I went. I partied. I cuddled and posed for far too many photos with all of my relatives (want a picture of me? just pull out a camera… I’ll be right over)… and it was a BLAST!

And now that you know all ten gajillion excuses for my trip, HERE.

HERE IS WHAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SEEM SO COOL:

The sixties.

The Sixties

Yeah. Non sequitur.

We had a photo booth, with wigs and glasses and other wild accessories.

Do NOT put a pile of wigs and glasses and other wild accessories in front of me (camera or not) and expect me not to parade around assuming you do not know who I am in my fabulous disguise. I was totally unrecognizable.

It was a hipper than hip, cooler than cool reunion of the Sherwood Girls on another Caper: Pah-tay, me: Brat-tay (dead center, wig) and Ice-Tay.

We went all sixties, all night long.

Yeah. The sixties may have been wild, zany and all kind of angel dusted-colorful, but they were never supposed to seem so cool.

But here, today, wearing the sixties like there is no tomorrow…  we were cool. We were so cool. Peace.

The thing that really bothers me

September 17, 2013 by MsCheevious

A few days ago I received an email from a family member which was addressing an issue we all eventually face: death, dying, and dealing with what’s left behind.

I saw that little email message, read the subject line, and promptly ignored it, switching over to Twitter. Ahhh Twitter… the place where one can spew out what’s on the heart and mind and see where the chips fall, without your house becoming a combat zone (unless of course, you’re someone as famous as Ashton Kutcher – he was really just misunderstood).

I’d completely forgotten about said email until a slew of replies back and forth started lighting my computer up this morning. By this time, I thought I’d just better click that little icon and see what was brewing in family-land. I suddenly found myself composing an homage to Eminem with phrases such as “It’s time to move the f*ck on” (my email wasn’t censored) and “yeah, I’d welcome someone manipulative, controlling and self-serving. NOT.”

Take hormones much? Yeah… probably not.

But after sharing such a moving show of love and humanity in the video yesterday, and after I said I wanted to go out and just “GIVE GIVE GIVE” this explosion of words is the thing that really bothers me. Where the hell did it come from? True, people sometimes have to hear it harshly, especially when their deafness is shriveling every ounce of love you ever had for them. And true, sometimes I am the only one willing to do the job. But I suppose I’d hoped for a better start to my day… that or I hoped that maybe TODAY would be the day that assholes everywhere would surprise us all and turn over a new leaf.

Then again… you know what they say, right? Tomorrow is another day. MOVING THE F*CK ON NOW.

Gotta love the Dog

June 21, 2011 by MsCheevious

Before I begin I don’t wanna hear anything about how NON Ms. Cheevious this post is, unkay? Trust me. I’m still creating fun, pleasure, frivolity and the enjoyment of life for all around, whenever humanly possible.

But Ms. Cheevious is entitled to have a heart too – so today I wanted to share this pic of me n my puppy (he’s ten now) Puggy.

Guess what breed he is? Ha! And, yes, my son, then six, named him. He was really bought for my son, but I arranged for the training and participated heavily (and of course, managed the puppy’s entire upbringing in his (and my younger son’s) formative years). Puggy became a part of our lives and our family, and we loved (and still do love) that snorty, spunky, squirrely little creature! I cannot recall a time in life with my son in first-fourth grade without Puggy jumping around when we walked in the door, or hiding because he’d torn apart the trash, or some other quirky behavior. Shortly after that Puggy went to live with my son’s dad because my work schedule made his alone time far too unfair to him.

He was recently diagnosed with skin cancer (or so my son says – he lives with my son and his dad out of state in NM now), so while I am here in NM visiting, I took some time to let the animal with the BLUE RIBBON stinky breath lick my arms and hands and face. Ew. But it was worth it.

Love the creatures and humans around you, people!  They are who/what make us the beautiful people we are!

20110618-093427.jpg

That’s all I got for now. Hope your week has been great and you continue the work of creating beauty, fun and yumminess all around you!

Love you people!!!!

Mmmmmpppphhhuuuhhhh!

XOXO,
Ms. Cheevious
